A Perfect Day Trip from Chandler: Tonto Natural Bridge, Lavender Fields, and Ice Cream Delights

  • Posted on

Looking for an unforgettable adventure just a couple hours north of Chandler? Our family recently discovered a gem of a day trip that combines stunning natural beauty, hands-on learning, and sweet treats—all in one memorable outing. Here’s how we spent the day exploring Tonto Natural Bridge State Park and Pine, Arizona, and why we think it’s the perfect itinerary for families or couples staying at our Chandler home.

🌄 Hiking Through History at Tonto Natural Bridge State Park

Our first stop was Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, about a two-hour scenic drive through Arizona’s desert and pine country. This state park is home to the largest natural travertine bridge in the world, and the hiking options range from beginner-friendly paths to more challenging scrambles down into the gorge.

We were blown away by the otherworldly rock formations, mini waterfalls, and towering cliffs around every corner. There’s something awe-inspiring for every age. The kids completed the Junior Ranger program, learning about geology, wildlife, and conservation—and they even earned ranger badges!

We also spotted javelinas and a deer during our hike, making the whole experience feel truly wild.

Footwear tip: Make sure to bring solid hiking shoes. There’s a lot of rock hopping, uneven terrain, and slippery surfaces—especially near the water features.

💜 Strolling Through the Lavender Fields in Pine

After a full morning of hiking, we drove just a few minutes up the road to visit the Pine Creek Lavender Farm.

This peaceful, fragrant little spot was a great place to unwind. We learned about the different varieties of lavender, how they’re used in everything from essential oils to teas and soaps, and picked up a few local-made products to take home. The kids had fun exploring and loved the butterfly-and-bee photo board.

🍦 Ice Cream Stop at The Gingerbread House

Before heading back home, we made one final (and delicious) stop in Pine for ice cream at The Gingerbread House. This charming little spot offered gourmet, handcrafted flavors in a cozy, storybook-style setting—perfect for a sweet treat and a few fun photos.

It was the perfect reward after a full day of hiking and exploring. The relaxed atmosphere and unique ice cream flavors made it a hit for both the kids and adults.

This little hidden gem is a must if you're traveling with kids—or if you're just a kid at heart.
